How much foot traffic can your tile handle?
The Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI) rates
ceramic tiles
for wear on a scale from 1 to 5. This rating does not measure the overall quality of the tile, but the tile’s resistance to abrasion and ability to handle foot traffic. PEI ratings are only used for glazed ceramic tiles.

- Low resistance to abrasion
- Can be used for walls (backsplashes, etc.)
- Only decorative, no foot traffic
PEI Class 3
- Can be used for residential floors, countertops, and walls
- Moderate resistance to wear and tear
- Can handle a reasonable amount of foot traffic
PEI Class 4
- Popular in residential and light industrial settings
- High resistance to wear and tear
PEI Class 5
- Can handle very heavy foot traffic
- Used in commercial/industrial environments
