Ceramic Tile Installation Cost
By ProMatcher Staff
How Much Does Ceramic Tile Cost?
The average cost of ceramic tile installation is $7-8 per square foot (including labor and a mid-grade tile). However, there are a number of factors that may increase or decrease the cost. Use the list of cost factors below to get a better idea of how much you can expect to pay for your project.
1. Regional cost differences. The cost of ceramic tile installation will vary depending on your geographic location. If the cost of living in your area is high, expect to pay more for labor costs. Check out ProMatcher’s Tile Cost Report to find estimated prices in your town.
2. Where is the tile being installed? Ceramic tile can be used for 1) floors, 2) showers and tubs, 3) countertops, 4) walls, or 5) ceilings. Each type of project requires different tools and materials, affecting the cost of installation.
3. Amount of material needed. Most contractors will base their quote on the square footage of the area to be tiled. For a backsplash, you’ll probably need a lot less material than you would for a flooring project. The contractor will also need to order extra material to account for waste.
4. What type of preparation is required for the project? Do the existing floors need to be ripped up? Are the subfloors in good condition? Does furniture need to be moved out of the way? Does a tile backerboard need to be installed? Should a moisture barrier be laid under the tile? Although basic surface preparation should be included in the estimate, demolition and repairs will come at an additional cost.
5. Size of tile. As a general rule, it requires more labor to install smaller tiles. This will add to the overall cost of your project.
6. Tile pattern. Complex or custom patterns are going to cost extra. Additionally, creating a mosaic or installing a custom inlay will be more expensive.
7. Type of tile. The type of tile you choose will definitely impact the installation cost. While unglazed quarry tiles are typically the most affordable option, there are many other options available. Custom or hand-painted tiles will come at a premium.
8. PEI Rating. The Porcelain Enamel Institute (or PEI) gives all ceramic tiles a wear rating on a scale of 1 to 5. This rating may affect the cost of the tile.
9. Grout, mortars, and adhesives. The amount of grouting required will depend on the size of the joints. The cost of grout and adhesives should be included in the cost per square foot, but make sure it is included in the cost estimate. 10. Cleanup. Cleanup should be included in the contractor’s quote. Also, during the installation process, they should use plastic sheeting to protect your furniture and keep dust out of other areas of your home.
